Review - Sequel of Lords of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Return of the King is a hack and slash action game based on Peter Jackson's second and third movies and the game follows each and every scene with almost religious reverence.

Graphically, the 3d rendered levels and characters are well done, and resemble the movies material as much as they possibly can, given the hardware limitations of the original Xbox.

The Return of the King is an audio-visual success although the constant inclusion of key movie scenes in lower quality compared to the actual movies is a bit questionable. I'd rather watch the movies instead!

Gameplay offers a variety of characters to play with, and in general, I must say the formula is simple but rather good. The fighting system isn't the smoothest or the most satisfying out there, it's a bit clunky but it gets the job done.

Accumulating experience points allows to unlock ever more complex and devastating combos either for one of the characters or for the whole party.

The camera work is maybe the weakest part of this package though, with confusing angles which will lead to several deaths until you figure out where the game wants you to go.

Bottom line: Despite its age, The Return of the King is an enjoyable package, worth playing through if you are a fan of the trilogy. 8,5/10
