Character design is one of the strong points of Sengoku Blaede
This is one of the best side-scrolling shooters on PS2
Review-I am all about bringing classic arcade Psikyo shooters to our home consoles especially because they ooze quality from each and every angle you look at them!
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. II includes arcade ports of Sengoku Ace (aka Samurai Aces -1993) and Sengoku Blaede (aka Sengoku Ace 2 -1996).
Sengoku Ace was never ported to any home system, so this collection is a good choice if you want to pick it up. It's a feudal Japan Fantasy-themed vertical shooter which plays and feels very much like Gunbird.
Technically well done, Sengoku Ace play mechanics are pretty straightforward as it's mainly based on collecting coins and powerups and occasionally clear the screen with devastating smart bombs. There are infinite continues so it shouldn't be much of a challenge to complete this game unless you want to attempt the 1 coin approach!
Sengoku Blaede has already been ported gloriously awhile back to the Sega Saturn. It's a state of the art side-scrolling shooter graphically stunning, with inventive boss design and smooth gameplay.
Character design (by Jun Tsukasa) has also been bettered over the prequel so if you never had a chance to play this game, now is the time to discover one of Psikyo's greatest inspirational moment!
To conclude, this collection is obviously aimed at die-hard shmups fans (and collectors). Both games featured are excellent additions to any serious shooter fan library.
Bottom line: two of the better shooters in psikyo back catalogue gathered into a great retro complilation. 9/10
