Review-This game has been developed in California by Capcom Digital Studios but it definitely has a japanese feel to it.
Everything has been made with incredible accuracy. There are no glitches in the 3D engine, the detail is outstanding, there is not even the slightest hint of slowdown. The programmers obviously did a great job and winked at their source of inspiration a few times.
In the 1st level (graveyard) , buried skeletons will stick their arms out and will attempt to grab your ankles…”Army of Darkness” here or what?!
Also, Maximo clearly pays homage to Ghost 'n Goblins in more than a way. From the musical themes, to some of the enemies and the levels, you will see that the programmers had in mind capcom's 2d platformer but in 3D.
When Maximo gets hit, he will lose his armor, leaving him in his underwear...sounds familiar? The cool thing this time, is that you can actually purchase different kinds of boxers…my favorite one being the cow skin model.
The game is worth playing through the end, if only to see the credits-roll, where the music from Ghosts’n’goblins will be playing in the background, while you will see a 2D version of Maximo jump from one platform to the other just like Arthur :)
Now one little complaint: all the platforming action in 3D requires a solid camera which is easy to aim and adjust and this is what we have in this game, most of the time. Unfortunately, it can happen that the camera will be too slow in some situations, resulting in cheap deaths.
Bottom line: an excellent 3d patformer, with inspired audio-visuals and tight gameplay. 9/10
