Review - The Neo-Geo CD version came out well after the MVS and the home carts and is basically identical.

Unsurprisingly, the ever present loading time shows up but luckily doesn't get too much in the way. As an extra for the CD version, enhanced bgms really boost the atmosphere.

Specifically, in the Brazil stage, the opening scene is simply gorgeous. The thick forest opens up as you get ready to fight for survival while the smoking carcass of a helicopter has crashed nearby. Exotic noises seem to come from every corner of the jungle, adding a dramatic touch to the battle..

This is only a tiny example of the overall quality of the first chapter of this epic saga. King of Fighters '94 (Kof'94) has been taken care of in the smallest details. When walking over a puddle, your character will beautifully reflect in it and many stages such as the Pao Pao Cafe in Mexico or the Korean stage are a work of art.

Moreover, kof'94 introduced a lot of innovation such as the 3 on 3 battle mode (but with fixed teams) and an interesting dodge move (A+B).

Of course, not everything in this game is gold since some teams are really a sorry mess (maybe the US team is the worse) plus every team is normally associated with a country. But what does Joe Higashi has to do with Italy?!?

Of all of the KoFs, the '94 edition is probably the one that brought the greatest amount of innovation while the subsequent chapters really only tweaked the gameplay. What is worrying though is that 10 years later, kof'94 still feels somewhat fresh especially if compared with the latest King of Fighters outings. So either kof'94 is a work of genius or the latest KoFs are just rehashs...

Bottom line: the one that started it all and that still holds the test of time. A keeper. 9/10
