VGA screen in Tate mode is the way to go!
Review- One the last official releases for the Dreamcast, Triggerheart Exelica is a port from the Naomi arcade board.
It is a simple yet original vertical shooter with one big differentiator over the competition: the anchor system.
The anchor can be released onto any enemy to attempt to catch it and use it as shield or to spin it around your own ship before throwing it right into incoming enemy waves!
The system is simple, and the idea is both very original and empowering at the same time. Depending on how many circles you do around your ship with an enemy unit latched onto your anchor, you can then release a powerful anchor shot onto attacking waves decimating everything that moves. This will also grant you a higher score and inflict more damage than a regular shot. Addictive!
Graphically, the 5 levels are rather bare-looking with very little detail in the backgrounds but everything looks very crisp and smooth, especially when using the VGA box.
The music is ok without being too memorable or forgettable, let’s just say it works just fine while gameplay is probably the strong point of this vertical shooter which plays very differently from anything else on the market.
