Atomic Runner Chelnov

version: jp - year: 1992 - developer: data east - publisher: data east - format: mega drive, 8mbit cartridge - condition: near mint - rarity: uncommon

Chelnov coin-op and the X68000 port have a story involving a nuclear accident and include references to Chernobyl. All this is gone here.

Here, your eyes will be treated to some awesome parallax scrolling. Latter levels are also technically impressive.

Review - The Mega Drive port of Chelnov is basically an altered port of the coin-op featuring overhauled graphics and "censored" (or at least changed) intro, ending sequence and story.

Levels have been redesigned and they now feature an ancient civilization theme which is extremely cool. Level one starts out looking rather similar to the arcade game until you reach a section where an insane amount of parallax scrolling suddenly appears, giving to the game a great sense of depth.

Bosses also look much better and overall, I would say that this version of Chelnov is by far the best available despite the music which is sometimes harsh on the ears.

Chelnov on the Mega Drive is an underrated gem. The mix between shooting and platforming is expertly delivered resulting in one of the most playable action games available on Sega's 16 bit console.

Bottom line: If you are a true MegaDriver and haven't had a chance to play this game, you know exactly what needs to be done! 9/10
