Review - Spin off of the Ghosts’n Goblins series.

In this first episode of the trilogy you’ll be playing as Red Arremer (Firebrand in the west), the little red devil, traditionally a fierce enemy of Arthur.

The adventure is divided between an overhead rpg in which you talk to characters, collect information and move from one world to the next and between side-scrolling levels, in which the game turns into a tough platformer.

Red Arremer has a very unique control system, which takes some time to get used to. You can stick to vertical surfaces and even glide, so navigating the intricate levels isn’t so immediate, especially considering you can take a maximum of two hits before losing a life.

Considering the limited hardware it runs on, Makaimura looks impressive. Levels are simple yet well designed while the animations of Red Arremer are nicely done. Bosses are also fairly detailed and all this is framed within a beautiful gothic soundtrack, which puts the GB sound chips to excellent use...This might be hard to believe but it’s true!

Bottom line: In the end, Makaimura Gaiden is a worthy game which can be hard and frustrating but is rich in inventive challenges, and atmosphere. 8/10
