Centurion Defender of Rome

version: pal - year: 1991 - developer: ea - publisher: ea - format: A500, 2 disks - condition: near mint, w/map - rarity: slight

Review - Centurion Defender of Rome is a simple yet addictive real-time strategy game on which I spent many hours on the Genesis back in the day. This Amiga version is very similar to the Genesis version, but it also includes gladiatorial combat, which for some reason was left out of the Genesis port.

In general though, action sequences such as chariot racing and gladiatorial combat aren't very good, and they really represent just a diversion from the rest of the game.

Interestingly, all versions of Centurion feature Cleopatra on the cover artwork since it is actually possible to seduce her after she lets you in her palace, half-naked.

Strangely, the Genesis version of Centurion omits Cleopatra altogether and she is not even mentioned anywhere as far as I remember.

This Amiga version includes a cool map of the Roman Empire, not included in the Genesis port which In turn, has a much better manual with a lot of cool details and sketches on the different war strategies available to win the campaigns.

Bottom line: A nice real-time strategy game sprinkled with a few action mini-games with a strong setting and addictive gameplay. 8/10
